How Are You Sleeping?

“Today, 75% of us dream in color. Before color television, just 15% of us did.”
It takes the average person 10-15 minutes to go to sleep. “Being awake for 16 hours straight decreases your performance as much as if your blood alcohol level were .05%.”[1] Sleep is the natural response to the body’s need for rest. It is a gift from God that places a person out of consciousness into a phase of important recovery.
Some have different sleep schedules. Some sleep during the day others at night. The average person needs 7-9 hours of sleep every night. Some get less while others get more. When we get less than we need it can cause many problems. Irritability, memory problems, and immune system defects can occur. When we find ourselves void of sleep there may be underlying causes. How we sleep is often determinant based upon how we live. Spiritually how are you sleeping?
Are You Going to Bed Late Because of What You’re Doing (Proverbs 4:16)? Solomon imagined the wicked who refuse to go to sleep unless they have committed wickedness. For some, it must be committed at night, therefore, they wait long hours, often being void of sleep, to commit wicked acts. Does sleep not find you because you stay up late committing sin? On the contrary, maybe you are staying up so late and not sleeping because of study or devotion (cf. Psalm 132:3-5).
Are You Tossing and Turning Because of Personal Sins (Proverbs 28:1a)? While not directly about sleep, this verse is surely what happens when men are in sin. Night is unknown…what if Christ comes? Sleep is scary…what if I die? Darkness is alarming…who will find out what I’ve done? Don’t let personal sin be the cause of you’re restlessness. If you have a personal sin don’t go to sleep until you confess it to God. Be comforted, God’s awake (Psalm 121:3). Is the devil in your room while you sleep? “Mr Smith Wigglesworth, told a story of one night while asleep. He had been having terribly frightening dreams. At some point he awoke and aware of a demonic presence, looked around the room. There, near the foot of the bed was Satan himself. With a sigh, Smith simply said, ‘Oh, it’s just you.’ rolled over and went back to sleep.”[2]
Are You Sleeping in Because You Don’t Want to Work (Proverbs 6:9-10)? There is such a thing as oversleeping. Some sleep in because they don’t want to take responsibility for the day. God values rest but not over work. “Just a little longer” is the response to the alarm, until it is three hours later! Get enough sleep for a recharge but not too much where you feel drowsy and refuse to be productive.
Are You Sleeping Sweet in the Night Because of Your Walk in the Day (Proverbs 3:23-24)? There is nothing like a good night’s rest, especially when one is in a right relationship with God. This recognition allows one to sleep amid harsh earthen turmoil (Acts 12:6). Fears are not present since one is in the same state during the night as he is during the day. He walks in the light and enjoys the blood of Jesus (1 John 1:7). There is nothing like sleeping in the pillow of God’s hand.
What is the quality of your sleep? How you are sleeping may determine how you are walking. Ultimately, we will sleep—will it be in Jesus?
