Read THIS to be Healthier

Reading is a discipline that many have sought to grasp. History has shown us the importance of reading and when men have failed to read, they fail to communicate, learn, and grow. The Bible is written on an easy to read scale so you should not find too much trouble.

Reading in general is healthy. It is better if one reads than if one doesn’t. How can reading help you?

Readers Live Longer.[1] In a study of 3,635 individuals, it was shown that readers lived an average of two years longer than those who did not read.[2] Reading can lessen blood pressure too.[3] Reading the Bible can help you live longer. It can keep you updated on everything that will hurt you (Psalm 119:11), promoting abstinence from sins, people, and situations. Ultimately, reading the Bible will help you live in heaven for eternity (Acts 20:32).

Slows Cognitive Decline as You Age. “A 2013 study conducted by Rush University Medical Center found that people who’ve engaged in mentally stimulating activities all their lives were less likely to develop the plaques, lesions, and tau-protein tangles found in the brains of people with dementia.”[4] Reading is surely mentally stimulating. Reading the Bible can help you refrain from declining spiritually. The more you read it, the less likely you are to sin, but forgetting it can cause rapid deterioration (Psalm 53:4; Hosea 4:6; Hebrews 5:12-14).

Reduces Stress. Nothing beats reading a good book to which you become enveloped in the story. The anxiety of life and the stress of work, school, or responsibility fades into existence as you turn the pages. Reading the Bible can also reduce stress and provide comfort (Psalm 119:50, 82; Romans 15:4). There is nothing like sitting down during stressful situations and hearing from God about how He can help you. Reading the Psalms may be words you need to hear as you walk the path of distress.

Helps You Relax at Bedtime. “Research suggests that people who read before bed generally sleep better.”[5]A. M. Symington said, “A good book is a better resource in sleeplessness than drugs.” Reading calms the mind and it may be just as helpful as yoga for mental relaxation.[6] Perhaps Xerxes read the Persian records for this purpose (Esther 6:1). Reading the Bible also helps one relax. It is a good way to end the day. If you have trouble going to sleep, try counting Bible books instead of sheep. If you want to sleep with comfort read a few chapters before bed every night.

Boosts Intelligence. Warren Buffet, in response to a question about success said he read 500 pages every day.[7] Bill Gates reads 50 books every year.[8] You will never learn if you never read, therefore it is not good if you don’t read (Proverbs 19:2). Reading the Bible boosts spiritual intelligence. Want to be smart? Get busy in the fear of the Lord (Proverbs 1:7; 9:10). Earthen wisdom is but foolishness to eternal wisdom (1 Corinthians 1:18-31). If you want to be the valedictorian of knowledge in areas of science, history, morality, psychology, and society—read the Bible! Maybe to be extra wise, you will read a chapter in Proverbs every day, seeing there are 31 for the 31 days in a month!

Enhances Social Skills. Reading helps us interact with others. It teaches us about human interaction and allows us to participate in current information. Reading the Bible helps us with social skills. Forgetting to read the Bible may result in hateful attitudes toward others. We may resort to revenge (Romans 12:17-21), cursing (Ephesians 4:29), or gossip (Romans 1:29) if we do not read. It also may lead to forgetting about our mission (Matthew 28:19-20; Mark 16:15-16). If we forget to read, we may not be able to stand up for our beliefs when others ask us about them (1 Peter 3:15). Peer socialization is increased when you read your Bible for you will better understand your fellow man and your responsibilities to him.

The Bible is the best book you will come across. As you turn each page, the pages of your life will be transformed. There is no limit to what God’s holy Word can do if you will just but open it. Want to be healthier? Read your Bible!
