Avon, Pampered Chef, Tupperware, Thirty-One and even LulaRoe. As a homemaker I
feel like I have tried selling all of the catalog or home party shopping only products. If Im completely honest with you about why I had started each time, it was usually because I wanted the initial onboarding kit. It was always the cheaper option and it had almost all of the products I wanted. Something I noticed with these companies was that at the initial sign up, every brand would ask for you to explain your “why.” They want their new partners to say or write out their long term goals, what they hope to get out of their efforts with the business, and what they are dreaming of doing with the income they would bring in. Since my reasons were just because I wanted that super cute bag or fancy roast cooker I would just skip this part. I usually was just having fun with it and wouldn’t put thought into my future with them. They still would encourage each person to write this “why” down and even create a dream board with pictures of things, homes or vacations. They knew the only way to put you on a path of success was to get your mind focused on an end goal.
This thought that having our heart set on an end goal is not new or original to home party companies or big corporate businesses. In Matthew 6:21 Jesus said, “Where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.” The “treasure” Jesus is speaking about is that which is precious to us. The thing for which we long or have affection. When we truly want something, we will place a great deal of effort into making that thing attainable. If we want to lose weight, be in the Olympics or maybe just get the trash can to the curb each Tuesday night, we are going to figure out the best way to achieve the goal! That may mean changing our lifestyle or just setting an alarm on our phone. Whatever the case, in order to reach the goals, we have to implement change.
Prior to Matthew 6:21 in verses 19 and 20, Jesus explains that if our “why” for living is simply for earthly riches we will be sorely disappointed. Earthly riches can be easily destroyed without prior knowledge; however, Jesus explains that when our heart is set on heavenly treasure, we have no reason to worry about it being destroyed. He confirms this with His disciples in John 14:1-4 when He explains His leaving is simply to go prepare their place in heaven and He reminds them that they know how to get there. Having been with Jesus and longing to be with Him again, the disciples didn’t need a dream board to encourage them to stay on the narrow path (Matthew 7:14).
What about us? Have we, like the apostles, made heaven our “why” for living? By making heaven our goal we then understand that there may be lifestyle changes that need to take place and daily habits we need to implement. If we really want it, we will figure out how to achieve it. The more we study, learn and grow closer to God, the more vivid that dream board of heaven will become. Our why, is what drives us to our ultimate end goal. What is your “why?”
